Hauts de Riquets

von Yasmin Wright

A family story for 7 generations now...

Family of peasants from father to son, the BIREAUDs have been living in Riquets since 1880. Polyculture has always existed, animals too are part of the landscape. Cows and tobacco crops, cereals and plots of vines were the balance of people and place. Little by little, the vines took on more importance in the area, to be the main activity. But the values remain the same: self-sufficiency, the diversity of production and peasant knowledge.

The vineyard is located on the AOC of Côtes de Duras, one of the oldest AOC in France. For the record, it was their great-great-grandfather, Pierre Elie BIREAUD, who decided with several friends to go to Paris to make our enclave (between Bordeaux and Bergerac) an AOC in its own right!

Today they cultivate 10 ha of vines, a third of white grape varieties and two third of red grape varieties, all authorized in the AOC Côtes de Duras.

For the whites: sauvignon blanc, sauvignon gris, sémillon, chenin and muscadelle.

For the reds: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

The vines are mostly planted at 4000 feet per hectare.

The new generation of natural wines arrived in 2009 (Ivan) and his sister Léa a few years later. From 2018, Amélie (partner of Ivan) participates in the renewal of the Domaine.
